Micki owned Southwest Psychotherapy Associates for 35 years.
She has a Bachelor’s degree (1979) in Sociology with a minor in English from Baylor University and a Master’s degree in Social Work, specializing in Social Treatment (1984) from University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work. She did her internships with the District Attorney’s office in Dispute Mediation and the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences (TRIMS) in Psychotherapy. She did a year long externship in Family Therapy also at TRIMS. She is also trained in psychodrama and group therapy. She specializes in helping individuals, families, and groups as they make their way along the path of full personal actualization.
Micki is also a full member of American Group Psychotherapy Association and Southwestern Group Psychotherapy Society. She sits on the board of the Houston Group Psychotherapy Society. She is a member of the Mental Health Association and the National Association of Social Workers. She has chaired many professional committees and has sat on state and national task forces. She has presented clinical material nationally and internationally. She is also a certified mediator of disputes.
In 1986, Micki started Southwest Psychotherapy Associates, P.A. As the owner and chief psychotherapist, she grew the practice to include six practitioners specializing in various modalities.
Micki is a supervisor of “up and coming” therapists and a frequent public speaker. She is a regular on Great Day Houston TV show with host, Deborah Duncan. She is a mental health consultant with Channels 11, 2 and 13 in Houston. She has been featured in several magazines, most recently More Magazine. She presents on radio talk shows and has appeared twice on The Oprah Show as well.
Micki’s philosophy on what makes an effectual clinician is deep compassion along with a strong ability to confront what a client can not see, doesn’t want to see, or runs from, in a way that is digestible. This leads to transformational changes that are permanent and life changing. In my opinion, Carl Jung said it best, “Every defeat of the ego is a victory for the soul.”
The Bible in John 8:32 says, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” Not until one knows “the truth” about themselves, complete with all the grim hostilities, insecurities, and unresolved conflicts, is he or she totally “free.”
It is the role of the therapist to remove the camouflage, self-deception, and rationalizations, and to bring the unconscious conflicts into the conscious mind where reason can deal with them. Once reason is gained, the cure begins, because THE TRUTH DOES MAKE ONE FREE. Micki strongly believes the process of psychotherapy not only can give you freedom, but deeper happiness because as AA teaches us, “We are only as sick as our secrets.” Come get free and live into a deeper experience of happiness.
