New Year 2023

by Ty Lerman, PhD, LPC-S, CST, QTAP

The start of a new year is a natural time for reflection and goal-setting. Many people use this opportunity to set intentions for the coming year, which can help to provide focus, direction, and motivation.

Setting intentions is different from setting traditional goals. Goals are often specific, measurable, and time-bound, while intentions are more focused on the overall direction or theme of your actions. They can be more open-ended and flexible, and often involve personal growth or self-improvement.

To set intentions for the new year, start by taking some time to reflect on the past year. What were your accomplishments? What were your challenges? What did you learn? This can help you gain insight into your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth.

Next, consider what you want to focus on in the coming year. This might include things like improving your health, deepening your relationships, or developing new skills. Choose a few key areas that resonate with you, and try to be specific about what you want to accomplish. For example, rather than setting a vague intention to “be healthier,” you might choose to set a specific intention like “exercise 3 times per week” or “eat more vegetables.”

It’s also helpful to consider how your intentions align with your values and long-term goals. This can help to give your intentions more meaning and purpose, and make them more motivating.

Once you have your intentions set, it’s important to create a plan for how you will work towards them. This might involve breaking your intentions down into smaller, more manageable goals or tasks, and creating a schedule or roadmap for achieving them. It can also be helpful to enlist the support of friends, family, or a coach or mentor to help you stay on track and accountable.

It’s important to remember that setting intentions is a continuous process, and it’s okay if you don’t achieve everything you set out to do. Be kind and compassionate towards yourself, and don’t be afraid to reassess and adjust your intentions as needed.

Setting intentions for the new year can be a powerful way to focus your energy and create positive change in your life. By taking time to reflect, choosing specific areas of focus, and creating a plan for achieving your intentions, you can set the stage for a rewarding and fulfilling year.
